Peytec's Social Distancing Management System is an Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform that is built based on Peytec's proprietary network technology called Wireless Positioning and Sensing Network (WPSN™). 

To better describe why WPSN technology it is important to explain the difference between Social Distancing and Contact Tracing. 

What is Social Distancing (Physical Distancing)?

A Social Distancing or Physical Distancing means keeping a safe space between yourself and other people who are not from your household. In the case of COVID19, to practice social or physical distancing, the rule is to stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arms' length) from other people who are not from your household in both indoor and outdoor spaces.

What is Contact Tracing?

Contact tracing is an important tool to help diagnose or identify people who may have COVID-19 sooner and prevent the virus from spreading in your community or workplace. As far as COVID-19 cares, there are 3 kinds of people: 

 
Since COVID19 is highly contagious it can spread very quickly. The goal of Contact Tracing is to identify and isolate the infected people as fast as possible to prevent breakouts. For example, as illustrated below, if an infected person is isolated early enough, he/she would be the only infected person. If the infected person is not identified/get isolated 12 more people could potentially get infected. 
 
 

What is the difference between Social Distancing and Contact Tracing?

COVID-19 is very contagious and easily transmitted through droplets and airbornes. As per World's Health Organization (WHO) it is recommended that at distance of at least 6 feet is maintained between individuals at all the time. As per WHO, an interaction between individuals are considered high risk when two or more individuals are within 6 feet of each other for more than 15 minutes.Therefore Social Distancing is a preventative approach to stop the spread of COVID-19 whereas Contact Tracing is a reactive approach which tracks and informs individuals who have come in contact with an infected person so they could self-isolate. The goal of the contact tracing approach is to break the infection chain as early as possible to prevent breakouts. 

 

 

What is the Difference Between Mobile Apps and Peytec's Social Distancing System?

Peytec Technology:

  1. Distance Measurement:  WPSN™ technology uses wireless communication and sensory data to reliably measure the distance between devices automatically. For example, if John has a Peytec's Social Distancing Badge and Jennifer also has a Social Distancing Badge when they come to close proximity of each other, the Peytec's WPSN system automatically detects and measures the social distance between the two individuals. If there are more people, Peytec's Social Distancing Badge monitor and measure the distances between multiple Badges making Peytec's system great for applications where social distancing between multiple people needs to be captured simultaneously.
  2. Long Battery Life: One of the most important advantages of Peytec's Social Distancing Badges is its long battery life which is usage dependent and can be beyond 1 year. The WPSN technolgy has advanced power management technology that makes Peytec Social Distancing Badge to operate on ultra-low power while achieving communication range of up to 100 meters.

LED Social Distancing Alert System: Peytec's Social Distancing Badges have an intelligent onboard LED Alert system that flash when social distancing policies are violated. If the Badge holders are standing too close to each other, the Flashing LED reminds them to keep their social distancing in real-time. The LED Alert System is designed to be practical, efficient, and reliable. 
  4. Offline Data Collection: One of the major issues with wireless devices is the connectivity issue. While many systems require site surveying and installation of many readers, Peytec Social Distancing Badges collect interaction data offline and automatically report it when they come online again without losing the accuracy or integrity of interaction data collected. The Badges have ultra-low power internal memory and can collect interaction data up to one month before they run of memory space. Therefore with Peytec's Social Distancing System, the facility does not require to have coverage everywhere which makes deployments simple, fast, and cost-effective. 
  5. Waterproof Social Distancing Badges (IP67): Sanitization is crucial to keep equipment and device clean and safe to use. Peytec's Social Distancing Badges are waterproof; therefore, it is much easier to wash and sanitize them. Peytec's Social Distancing Badge are protected from immersion in water with a depth of up to 1 meter (or 3.3 feet) for up to 30 mins making it a perfect product for medical and industrial applications.

  7. Lightweight, Small, and a Industrial Operating Temperature: The Social Distancing Badges are the size of a credit card, a little thicker 8.5 cm x 5.4 cm x 0.4 cm (3.35 in x 2.13 in x 0.16 in), 56.8 g (2.0 oz). The badges also operate in a wide temperature of -40 ֯C to + 85 ֯C (-40 ֯F to +185 ֯F)        
  8. Privacy and Security: The data collected and stored is completely anonymous and is encrypted, the user on their own discretion can add more details to interaction or badge holders. Peytec uses Amazon's AWS cloud server to store and process data. Each user has its own account and has the option to login with a two-steps authentication methodology. The Peytec's Social Distancing System has multi-role so different kinds of accesses can be granted to different users.

Cloud Connectivity via Smart Gateway: The data that is captured locally in a user's premises can automatically transferred to Peytec's cloud server. The Smart Gateway can be connected to the cloud either through Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or LTE making connectivity very simple and convenient for most operations.

Automatic Distance Measurement Reliability Test: Besides Social Distancing Badges calculating the distance between each other and trigger LED Social Distancing Alerts, the Peytec system has a cloud base automatic reliability quality control technology that verify double checks the reliability of measured distances between multiple Badges.

For example, a user can search their organization's interaction directory based on a Badge ID and further narrow down the search based high risk interactions.  

Peytec's Social Distancing System and Technology Landscape:  

Many governments introduced mobile apps to help with contact tracing. The main goal of the government mobile apps is to prevent outbreaks in communities, cities, states/provinces, and countries. Based on a survey conducted, not everyone have adapted the contact tracing mobile apps since people are concerned with privacy issues. Moreover, some people, usually the elderly do not have access to compatible smartphones and  some workers have no cell phone policy at work. Lastly, some people complain that the mobile apps drain the smartphone's battery very quickly making it challenging to use it on a day to day basis. Overall, the mobile apps certainly help with contact tracing but it is not considered the most reliable solution specially for workplaces and smaller entities such as hospital or long-term care homes.   

The Peytec system, on the other hand, not only solves the issues the current contact tracing mobile apps have, it also provides a preventative social distancing platform the help managing, reducing or potentially eliminating the spread of COVID19. If someone gets sick in a community they would need to follow the local health guidelines and ultimately self-isolate. If a person who goes to work is infected that could potentially end up with the total shutdown of the whole facility. The organizational and the community risk levels are not comparables; therefore, the quality measures that are in place to protect the health and safety of a worker must be very different than a community member. In a community, an individual can chose to go to a grocery store, or a bar; however, in a workplace the worker needs to come to work and that person along side with the rest of the team need to work in conjunction for an operation to run. If the chain breaks due to the infection the whole workplace will be impacted.

The chart below, compares the mobile apps versus Peytec's Social Distancing WPSN system. The most important difference between the two is that the Peytec system both supports social distancing and contact tracing versus the government mobile app is only contact tracing. Furthermore, Peytec system measures the distance between the two or more individuals and sends alerts if the social distancing policies are not maintained; whereas, virtually no mobile apps have the social distancing alert features while maintaining a long battery life. Peytec system requires no cellphone and is very easy to operate. This is useful especially when a facility has visitors. When a visitor needs to access a building, the are given a badge and for the duration of their stay, the badge monitors interactions and alerts when social distancing policies are violated. Alternatively, if the facility adapt a mobile app system, it will need to require every person to install an app which is troublesome. Furthermore, the mobile apps are mainly for individual usages, whereas Peytec's Social Distancing system has both individual and management usage. If someone in a building does not maintain their social distancing, the management can provide additional training to make sure the residents, visitors, or workers maintain their social distancing at all times.

There are a number of other technologies that are used as a Social Distancing. For example, Real-time Location System (RTLSs) have been repurposed for social distancing applications. 

 

What are Real-time Location Systems (RTLSs)?

Real-time Location Systems (RTLSs) are wireless devices that are used to automatically identify and track the location of objects or people in real time, usually within a building or other contained area. The usually require an expensive infrastructure to enable location tracking. The RTLS systems work mainly based on a concept called triangulation which require at least 3 readers for it to work effectively. Installing a RTLS system usually requires site surveying, and labour-intensive installation process. Furthermore, the RTLS system track the exact location of a person which introduces privacy concerns. The battery life of RTLS system is relatively short since it needs to communicate with multiple readers every time it is reporting an interaction data. The hardware costs of RTLS system is also very expensive due to the special design of their modules. The range of RTLS tags are shorter that BLE and WPSN which make it require many readers. The RTLS system only work in the presence of RTLS readers so it would be hard to cover the corners, yards, and etc.

 

What are Ultrasonic Systems?

The Ultrasonic Systems work based on acoustic signals. The ultrasound communication range is usually about 2-4 meters. Longer ultrasonic ranges is not usually offered for individual use due to safety concerns. As a result, the ultrasound devices are usually paired with wireless communication devices such as BLE. The ultrasound devices provide good level of ranging accuracy, about 1 cm but at the same are relatively expensive. The accuracy of 1 cm may not be needed for the Social Distancing Systems. The ultrasonic devices may be subject to interferences which could affect their accuracy and reliability, specially in industrial environments.
